This is the Los Angeles Rare Bird Alert for August 4.

The female LONG-TAILED DUCK along the lower LA River in Long Beach just below Willow Street was reported through July 30.

The male RED-BREASTED MERGANSER continued on the lake at Harbor Regional Park in Harbor City through August 1.

A COMMON GROUND-DOVE was at Azusa Pacific University on July 29.

A first of fall BAIRD’S SANDPIPER was along the LA River south of Rosecrans Blvd. in Paramount on July 31.

A SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPER was at Duckbill Lake at the Piute Ponds on Edwards AFB (letter of permission required) on August 2.

Up to three YELLOW-CROWNED NIGHT-HERONS (and adult and two immature birds) have been at the Ballona Freshwater Marsh near Playa del Rey through August 2. Most frequently they have been seen near the bend of the marsh adjacent to the corner of Lincoln and Jefferson. An AMERICAN BITTERN was observed at the marsh on July 30.

An OVENBIRD was at Madrona Marsh Preserve in Torrance from July 28-30. It was near the “Chevron corner”, by the short flat boardwalk. It has been skulky but occasionally singing. Regular preserve hours are 10-5 Tuesday through Sunday.
