This is the Los Angeles Rare Bird Alert for August 12.

A SURF SCOTER was along Ballona Creek east of the Lincoln crossing on August 6.

COMMON MERGANSERS was at Castaic Lagoon on August 5 and at Rowena Reservoir in the Los Feliz area on August 9.

A RED-BREASTED MERGANSER was at Quail Lake near Gorman on August 8.

BAIRD’S SANDPIPERS were along the lower LA River above Willow Street in Long Beach on August 7, between Artesia and Long Beach Blvd. on August 8 and between the Del Amo crossing and the railroad bridge on August 10.

PECTORAL SANDPIPERS were on the lower LA River just above the Willow Street crossing from August 5-7, south of the Somerset crossing on August 7 and north of the Alondra crossing on August 11.

SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPERS were on the lower LA River just above the Willow Street crossing from August 5-8 and north of the Wardlow crossing on August 10.

A SOLITARY SANDPIPER was at the Ballona Freshwater Marsh on August 11.

A LAYSAN ALBATROSS was southwest of Santa Catalina Island on August 8.

At least one of two YELLOW-CROWNED NIGHT-HERONS sighted in the Ballona area continued through August 11. It was last reported at the Ballona Freshwater Marsh from along the path south of the intersection of Jefferson and Lincoln.

A VERMILION FLYCATCHER continued at the Piute Ponds on Edwards AFB through August 11 (letter of permission required). It has been by the gazebo along Ave. C, near the southeast corner of Duckbill Lake.

A female PURPLE MARTIN was over the LA River at the Willow Street crossing on August 7.
