This is the Los Angeles Rare Bird Alert for Thursday, February 2.

Over twenty GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GEESE were at the Rio Hondo Spreading Basins in Pico Rivera on January 27 and 28.  The birds were in the northeast corner of the basins.  Access is just west of Paramount and Mines.

One male and four female type WHITE-WINGED SCOTERS were off Dockwelier State Beach in El Segundo through February 1.

A female LONG-TAILED DUCK at the Ballona Creek mouth was present through January 28.  Park at the end of Pacific Ave on the south side of the Ballona Creek and continue on foot to the channel and jetties.  A BRANT continues here as well.

A ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK (probably the same one seen earlier west of Quail Lake) was at 290th Street West and the LA Aqueduct in the west Antelope Valley on February 1.

Up to 112 MOUNTAIN PLOVERS were in the Antelope Valley on January 27.  They were in a field on the east side of 110th Street East, between Ave. I and J.

A BURROWING OWL is at the San Gabriel River Spreading Grounds.  It has been near the spillway for the south pond.  Access is from Washington Blvd, just west of the 605 Freeway.

Two RED-NAPED SAPSUCKERS were in Altadena on January 27 and another was at Rose Hills in Whittier (near gate #11) on January 29.

The GRAY FLYCATCHER continues at Holy Cross Cemetery in Culver City southwest of the office complex near the top of the hill.

The DUSKY-CAPPED FLYCATCHER and a LUCY’S WARBLER continue at Veteran’s Park in Bell Gardens.  Look for them west of the Senior Center yard or in this general area.

The BELL’S VIREO at Cudahy Park in Cudahy was present through January 27.  It has been in Chinese Elms overhanging the park’s west side fence and behind and enclosure containing an electrical box.

A SAGE THRASHER was east of Orcas Park in Lakeview Terrace on January 28.  It was midway between the park and the 210 Freeway overpass.  More SAGE THRASHERS are being reported in the Antelope Valley.

The BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLER at El Segundo Library Park was seen through February 1.  It was near the patio area in the northwest part of the park.

The PAINTED REDSTART in Chavez Ravine was present through January 31.  From the parking area at Stadium Way and Academy Road, walk well north to a spot south of the restroom and play area.  The bird often frequents a white oak in this area.

SUMMER TANAGERS continued at West LA College (a male along Freshman Drive, just inside the entrance) and at Gonzales Park in Compton where a second bird was found on January 28 (both female type birds).

A WHITE-THROATED SPARROW continued at Sand Dune Park in Manhattan Beach.  It was seen through January 27 along the south boundary of the park.  Another was at Placerita Canyon near the start of the Waterfall and Los Pinetos Trails.

A HOODED ORIOLE continues at Ralph Dills Park in Paramount.  It was seen through January 27.
