There's nothing more heartbreaking than seeing a plastic ring around a bird's neck.” ...

“We are very excited to be part of the City’s plastic recycling program,” agreed Lisa Fimiani, a representative with Friends of Ballona Wetlands and Los Angeles Audubon Society. “I have seen Snowy Egrets with plastic bags around their heads, Ruddy Ducks with rubber rings forcing their beaks to stay open, and 6-pack plastic rings around Western Gulls necks. There's nothing more heartbreaking than seeing a plastic ring around a bird's neck.”

The Great Garbage Swirl  "The horse latitudes are known for dead wind. They lie between the 30th and 35th latitudinal parallels, across the globe, above and below the equator. Their name supposedly comes from the days when Spanish merchant ships, bound for the West Indies, would practically screech to a halt upon crossing the area’s threshold and, to lighten their load and conserve water, would push overboard the horses they had brought along.  While they’re no longer the gravesite of countless unfortunate horses, the horse latitudes are now home to a new menace born of unfettered commercial striving:

Pacific Ocean Garbage Patch  "There is a new continent in the Pacific Ocean. Plastic. Trash. Junk. Mountains of trash that has not and will not biodegrade is trapped in an area roughly 10 million square miles in size."  "Apparently the mass of the plastic particles is six times more than the mass of the natural plankton in the area. This large expanse of ocean is becoming unhealthier and unhealthier, and less and less navigable. The plastic is found at depths of up to 30 meters. It is literally creating a landmass."
