THE RECOVERY OF THE KIWIKIU (Maui Parrotbill; Pseuonestor xanthophrys)

Presented by: Dr. Hanna Mounce

Date: Wed., Feb. 10th, 2016 | Time: 7:30-9:30 p.m. | Location: Audubon Center at Debs Park

The conservation and recovery of endangered forest birds is Hanna Mounce's passion. She came to Hawaii in 2006 and joined Maui Forest Bird Recovery Project as a temporary research technician.

Now in 2015, Hanna has received her doctorate at the University of Kent under Dr. Jim Groombridge working on "Recovery of the endangered Kiwikiu (Maui Parrotbill, Pseudonestor xanthophrys): population dynamics, conservation genetics and strategies for reintroduction". Hanna is the Coordinator of Maui Forest Bird Recovery Project and the Executive Director of Na Manu Koa Conservation on Maui. Hanna oversees the day to day operations of these projects and coordinates and implements research and management programs to save Hawaiian forest birds from extinction. This includes conduction and facilitation of research on behavior, population and breeding ecology, and recovery actions for Hawaiian Honeycreepers, primarily the Kiwikiu (or Maui Parrotbill).

Originally from northern California and graduating from Humboldt State University in 2003 with a B.Sc. with Honors in Wildlife, Hanna has worked in public and private sectors of avian conservation across the United States and Costa Rica.

Key research interests include, species led conservation, rapid evolution in island avifauna, island species genetics, and avian use of non-native landscapes.
